What You Need to Know About Stainless Steel: Common Types of Stainless Steel

Tuesday, 02/06/2026, 08:30

Today, stainless steel is one of the most widely used materials in both daily life and industrial production. Common grades such as 304, 316, 201, 430, and 410 stainless steel are extensively applied in various fields, including household appliances, furniture, construction, food processing, chemicals, and manufacturing industries.

In metallurgy, stainless steel is an iron-based alloy containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Thanks to the self-forming chromium oxide layer on its surface, stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance compared to ordinary steel. Although it is not completely immune to rust in all environments, stainless steel is still considered a highly durable material with a long service life and strong aesthetic value, effectively meeting the requirements of use under a wide range of conditions.

Common Types of Stainless Steel

Depending on the composition and the proportions of elements in their structure, stainless steels are classified under different names such as 430, 210, 201, 310, 310S, 316, 304, and others. However, there are three most commonly used types, namely:

– Stainless Steel 304 (also known as SUS 304).
– Stainless Steel 201 (also known as SUS 201).
– Stainless Steel 430 (also known as SUS 430).

Stainless steel 304, 201, and 430 each have their own advantages and are widely used in both daily life and industrial applications. Choosing the right type of stainless steel helps ensure product quality, durability, and long-term economic efficiency.

Stainless Steel 304 (SUS 304)

Stainless Steel 304 is a type of stainless steel with a relatively high nickel content, with a minimum of 8%. In austenitic stainless steel, nickel can be partially replaced by other elements such as chromium, manganese, nitrogen, or copper to enhance corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel 304 is considered one of the best stainless steel grades, offering high strength and excellent ductility, and it is highly resistant to rust. Because of these properties, its cost is higher compared to other types of stainless steel.

To distinguish 304 from other common stainless steel grades, it can be tested by observing sparks during cutting or by applying a testing reagent on the surface. Products made from 304 stainless steel will maintain their brightness and original color without significant.

Stainless Steel 201

It is a very common stainless steel grade in household applications, used to manufacture items such as tables, chairs, basins, sinks, bowls, and kettles. Stainless Steel 201 was developed after 304 and 430. However, its durability and corrosion resistance are between these two grades. In other words, it is better than 430 but inferior to 304. For Stainless Steel 201, the surface should be regularly maintained and protected to prevent rusting or the appearance of tiny pits on the surface.

We can identify 201 stainless steel by using a chemical testing solution. If the product is made of 201 stainless steel, after about 20 seconds of applying the solution, the contact area will gradually turn brick red.

Stainless Steel 430

Stainless Steel 430 is considered a medium-grade stainless steel compared to other types. It has moderate resistance to oxidation and rust, as well as reasonable durability. Its cost and lifespan are approximately half that of Stainless Steel 304 and about two-thirds that of Stainless Steel 201. As a result, products made from Stainless Steel 430 are generally affordable and suitable for most consumers.

In Stainless Steel 430, nickel is replaced by manganese. Therefore, it is magnetic and can be attracted by a magnet. This property can be used to distinguish it from other stainless steel grades: products made from 430 stainless steel will show a noticeable magnetic attraction when tested with a magnet.

To choose the right type of stainless steel and ensure long-term durability, selecting a reliable supplier is very important. Vintech Fittings provides high-quality stainless steel fittings manufactured according to ASTM A249/A269 standards, using 304/304L or 316L grades, meeting diverse requirements across various industrial applications.
